Alright Melbourne. You loved our articles on the best crepes, galettes and steak restaurants in Melbourne. So we decided to tackle a big one here – Melbourne’s best gelato and ice cream scoops!

And can I just say, this was a fun one to write about (and taste test…). Among Melbourne’s culinary delights, there really is a stand out when it comes to the ultimate sweet escape – gelato and ice cream!

Gelato ain’t just a dessert here. It is a passion, a work of art. An escape. Join us as we embark on a delicious journey to uncover the best ice cream and gelato scoops available in Melbourne.

What is the difference between gelato and ice cream?

They have similar ingredients and the terms are often used interchangeably. But what is the difference between ice cream and gelato?

According to The Spruce Eats, one of the main differences is:

Ice cream contains more cream than milk, whereas gelato is made with a greater proportion of whole milk to cream.

Another difference is that ice cream ingredients often include egg yolks while gelato usually has no eggs. There are also subtle differences are in the storage and speed of churning. The unique characteristics account for the difference in taste and texture.

Ice cream generally has more fat compared to gelato. Therefore, gelato is probably a little healthier. Gelato also tends to be a little more dense and smoother in texture.

Where to get the best gelato and ice cream in Melbourne

Both ice cream and gelato are famous (and delicious) in Melbourne, we have found gelato is the more commonly found and popular of the two.

Without further delay, let’s take a journey of Melbourne Buddy’s list of the best scoops available in Melbourne.

Messina Gelato

Messina Gelato

Location: Several locations in Melbourne including Windsor, Richmond, Brunswick East and Malvern

No list of the best gelato in Melbourne would be complete without mentioning the amazing Gelato Messina. Originating in Sydney, and still dominating the NSW gelato scene, the Melbourne Messina stores have also been growing in popularity locally.

Similarly to Piccolina and Pidapipo, Messina has a sizeable collection of classic gelato but also regularly launches new and innovative creations that push the boundaries of what gelato can be.

If you get a chance, try the seasonal special called Darkside – a chocolate fondant gelato with dark chocolate fudge and cocoa nib nougatine.

Kariton Sorbettes

Being aware of and understanding Melbourne’s time zone and daylight saving is essential.

In this post, we will discuss Melbourne daylight saving and those twice yearly clock adjustments that will leave you feeling like you’ve gained or lost precious hours of sleep.

Ultimately, as you will see, it all makes sense.

Melbourne Time Zone

Let us first look at the time zone Melbourne is in.

Melbourne (and the whole state of Victoria) is in the Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) zone. This time is plus 10 of the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). You will also see this written as UTC +10:00.

Remember AEST for later in the text.

What does UTC +10:00 mean?

AEST or UTC +10:00 means that the local time is 10 hours ahead of  Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

For example, if it is 12:00 PM UTC, the local time in a UTC +10:00 location (for example, Melbourne) would be 10:00 PM.

This is Melbourne’s standard time zone for most of the year. But it is not that simple. There is an interesting twist that occurs during daylight saving time.

About Melbourne Daylight Saving Time

Melbourne and the state of Victoria have Daylight Saving Time.

This is a common practice in many places in the world where clocks are adjusted forward by one hour during the warmer months of the year to make better use of natural daylight in the evenings.

Simply, you put your clock one hour forward at the start of daylight saving and put back one hour when it ends.

During Daylight Saving Time, Melbourne and Victoria operate one hour ahead of the usual AEST. In other words, UTC+11. This time is called the Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT).

Daylight Saving Time in Melbourne
Daylight Saving Time – can be confusing

Is Melbourne on Daylight Saving?

To know whether Melbourne is currently on Daylight Saving Time, we need to be aware of the starting and finishing dates for daylight saving time in Victoria.

When does Daylight Saving start?

Melbourne transitions to AEDT (Daylight Savings starts) on the first Sunday in October. During this change, clocks are set forward by one hour at 2:00 AM local time, becoming 3:00 AM AEDT. The change to daylight saving time makes it easier to enjoy Melbourne outdoor activities and exciting night life.

When does Daylight Saving end?

On the other hand, Daylight Savings ends in April. Melbourne switches back to AEST on the first Sunday in April. At 3:00 AM AEDT, clocks are set back to 2:00 AM AEST. This change means the end of daylight saving time, meaning the arrival of cooler weather and shorter daylight hours.

Is Melbourne currently AEST or AEDT?

As we discussed above, this question will depend on the time of the year. Melbourne goes into AEDT on the first Sunday in October and switches back to AEST on the first Sunday in April.

Let’s look at it for 2022, 2023 and 2024.

2022/ 2023 Melbourne Daylight Saving Time

Daylight Saving Time / AEDT begins (and AEST ends) on Sunday 2nd October 2022 (at 2am).

Daylight Saving Time / AEDT ends (and AEST starts) on Sunday 2nd April 2023 (at 3am).

2023/ 2024 Melbourne Daylight Saving Time

Daylight Saving Time / AEDT begins (and AEST ends) on Sunday 1st October 2023 (at 2am).

Daylight Saving Time / AEDT ends (and AEST starts) on Sunday 7th April 2024 (at 3am).

Do we gain or lose an hour in Melbourne?

The idea of gaining or losing time is a bit of a strange one.  Let’s look at it in some detail.

When daylight saving time begins in October, and clocks move forward by an hour, you lose an hour of sleep on that night. But you are gaining an extra hour of daylight in the evenings and it means warmer weather is coming.

On the other hand, when daylight saving time ends (in April), and clocks are placed back by one hour, you get an extra hour of sleep on that one night. But it also signifies colder months coming as well as shorter days.

Do the clocks go forward or back in October?

In October every year, clocks in Melbourne go forward by an hour, signalling the start of daylight saving time.

Do the clocks go forward or back in April?

In April, clocks in Melbourne go back by an hour, signalling the start of daylight saving time.

Melbourne Magic Coffee – what is it and where to get it? https://www.melbournebuddy.com/melbourne-magic-coffee/ Sun, 08 Oct 2023 05:37:47 +0000 https://www.melbournebuddy.com/?p=4287 Article published: 8th October 2023 We all know Melbourne arguably has the best coffee in the world. Article published: 8th October 2023

We all know Melbourne arguably has the best coffee in the world.

But it also holds a coffee secret often unknown to baristas outside of Victoria.

A Melbourne magic coffee.

It is a specific style of coffee that originated right here in Melbourne and is known for its unique taste and presentation of the coffee.

What is the Melbourne Magic coffee?

Simply put, the Melbourne magic is typically served in a 150ml cup or mug with a double ristretto then topped up with a flat white style milk. Some baristas prefer to serve it a tiny bit cooler than other styles.

Here is what makes a Melbourne magic coffee special:

Double Ristretto Shot

The base of the Melbourne magic coffee recipe is a double ristretto shot. A ristretto shot is a concentrated espresso shot made with a smaller amount of water, resulting in a more intense and flavourful coffee.

Having the Milk Just Right

The next key ingredient is the milk. In a Melbourne magic, the milk is carefully steamed to create microfoam, which is velvety and smooth. It is a flat white style of milk which has only a little bit of foam. Achieving the right texture in the milk is crucial to the coffee’s overall balance.

Getting the Right Balance of Coffee and Milk

What sets the Melbourne magic apart is the ratio of coffee to milk. It’s typically served in a smaller glass, mug or cup (150ml is the recommended size) and usually uses an equal amount of milk and espresso, creating a harmonious balance between the strong coffee and creamy milk.

The Strength and Flavour of the Magic

The result is a coffee that is a bit stronger and more concentrated than a traditional latte or cappuccino, but smoother and creamier than a straight espresso.

Melbourne Magic Coffee Review

I find the Melbourne Magic a great pick up in the morning.

It is a short coffee with a strong, bold flavour. And at the same time, because it is made with a double ristretto and not a double espresso (a ristretto has as much coffee as an espresso but half the water so it is more concentrated), it is less bitter.

Where can I get the Melbourne Magic?

You may not find a Melbourne Magic on the menu in every Melbourne cafe you visit. But most “good” cafes in inner Melbourne will be able to make you fine. Just ask the barista next time you are out and about.

Conclusion

Melbourne is a coffee lovers paradise. And the Melbourne magic is just one example of the city’s dedication to crafting exceptional coffee experiences. Try it next time you are in Melbourne and leave us a comment below as to what you thought.

Article published: 7th October 2023

The city of Melbourne is known as a top global destination for tourists and one of the most liveable cities in the world. However, just like so many other tourist hotspots around the world during the pandemic (and so much more with our prolonged lockdowns – a walk in the park, anyone?), Melbourne’s tourism industry took a brutal hit during with COVID. With Australia’s geographic isolation, prolonged travel restrictions and international borders being closed for nearly 2 years, Melbourne faced a complete stand still when it came to worldwide visitors.

Now, as the world slowly recovers from the pandemic, Melbourne has been reimagining its tourism strategies to attract international visitors once again. In this post, we will explore some of the more innovative approaches Melbourne is taking to freshen up its tourism industry post pandemic and some others we think may benefit Melbourne in the longer run.

Leveraging Technology

During the pandemic and since, in a new type of world where travel restrictions and health uncertainty lingers, tourist destinations have turned to the digital realm to stay relevant and boost tourism numbers.

Think virtual tours and enhanced showcasing of our numerous attractions. Think interactive experiences and virtual reality. All of these are becoming essential tools to showcase things to do in a global modern city. Imagine if in 2023, Melbourne can utilise these digital mediums to their fullest. Prospective Melbourne visitors can begin to explore and taste what iconic landmarks like the Federation Square, Fitzroy Gardens or the Royal Botanic Garden and the National Gallery of Victoria are all about from the comfort of their homes.

Digital Reach and Marketing

Australia is considered far and isolated by most international visitors. We think this is a blessing. But in a world where travel in general has been hampered and cost of living pressures abound and show no signs of abating, it would be unwise to simply sit back and expect that things will just return to how it used to be. A proactive, unified approach is needed to ensure we are not overtaken by other destinations.

Melbourne’s digital reach and marketing efforts need to be active now more than ever before to allow it to remain competitive as a prominent destination in the virtual world, even when physical travel has been more challenging. With borders open now, we need to showcase just how great Australia and Melbourne are to potential visitors.

And this is not that difficult with so much there to see, explore and experience. Melbourne should continue to actively engage with the travel community, bloggers, influencer and travel media outlets. By inviting others to explore the city, Melbourne harnesses their reach to showcase the city’s attractions to a global audience. These collaborations can help to create buzz and excitement around Melbourne as a top travel destination.

Showcasing Safety and Stability

In the wake of the pandemic, safety and health became paramount concerns for travellers. There is more of an awareness of what can go wrong in general and just how bad things can get.

Therefore it is so important that Melbourne and Australia recognise this and do what it takes to mitigate potential traveler concerns.

When it comes to health, Melbourne has gone to great lengths to ensure that the city is a safe destination for international tourists. Strict sanitation protocols, contactless check ins and a robust healthcare system are in place to provide visitors with peace of mind. The city’s commitment to health and safety serves as a powerful reassurance to potential tourists, encouraging them to consider Melbourne as a safe and responsible travel choice.

Just like in health, it is important to do all we can on a policy level to reassure any visitor that despite the distance from their home, they will be looked after if something was to go astray. Minimising crime, offering a welcoming culture and maximising affordable accommodation are just some of the strategies to further invite tourists.

Collaborations with Airlines and Travel Agencies

Melbourne has already forged partnerships with travel agencies and airlines to offer attractive travel packages and discounts. By continuing and collaborating with industry stakeholders, we can tap into their marketing reach and customer base. An emphasis on specialised packages that include flights, accommodations and curated experiences in Melbourne designed to entice international visitors should be a focus of any tourism initiative. These partnerships make it easier and more affordable for tourists to plan their Melbourne adventure.

Sustainable Tourism Initiatives

Sustainability has become a significant factor in travellers’ decision making processes. Global warming, being animal and environment friendly as well as accepting of others from all backgrounds and walks of life are crucial considerations for travellers. Melbourne is luckily generally a great place for this. We are well aware of this trend and have been actively promoting sustainable tourism. The city has introduced many eco friendly practices, such as waste reduction programs, renewable energy initiatives and sustainable transportation options. Melbourne’s commitment to environmental conservation aligns with the values of modern travellers who seek to explore destinations responsibly.

Cultural Experiences and Events

One of Melbourne’s greatest strengths as a tourist destination lies in its rich cultural tapestry. The city has organised amazing cultural Melbourne events, festivals and exhibitions that will continue to rekindle international interest. Events like the Melbourne International Film Festival, White Night Melbourne and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival showcase the city’s diverse cultural offerings. These events not only attract international tourists but also create a sense oft vibrancy and excitement within the city for locals.

Focus on Regional and Neighborhood Tourism

While Melbourne’s CBD has always been a significant draw for tourists, the pandemic has given rise to a renewed interest in regional and neighbourhood tourism. Melbourne’s suburbs, such as Fitzroy, St. Kilda and Brunswick, all have unique and unbeatable charm and character waiting to be discovered. The city should continue to actively promote these areas, encouraging visitors and locals alike to explore beyond the city centre. By highlighting the local gems in its suburbs and regional landmarks, Melbourne offers international tourists a more authentic and immersive experience.

Welcoming International Students

Melbourne has long been a favourite destination for international students for a long time and the city aims to further welcome this crucial demographic. Recognising that international students often become the most enthusiastic ambassadors for Melbourne, the city should continue to introduce initiatives to attract more students and also to welcome them in the best way. Scholarship programs, improved support services including for mental health, opportunities for international students to engage with the local community and fun activities will only help solidify this crucial bond. By nurturing the student population, Melbourne hopes to see a positive ripple effect on its tourism industry long term.

Investment in Infrastructure

To be the best, you have to compete with the best. And this includes infrastructure. To enhance the overall tourist experience, Melbourne has invested in upgrading its infrastructure. This includes improvements to public transportation, the expansion of accommodation options and the development of new attractions. By continuously enhancing the city’s infrastructure, Melbourne ensures that it remains a world class destination with the best amenities for international visitors when they arrive to our beautiful country.

Conclusion

After a difficult period and setback, Melbourne needs to work hard to stay ahead of the pack when it comes to tourism. Focusing on ways to attract international visitors post pandemic reflect the city’s resilience and adaptability. By leveraging technology and digital marketing to showcase just how awesome this place really is as well as emphasising safety and sustainability, and focusing on culture and the regional attractions, Melbourne is reimagining its tourism industry for a modern, post pandemic world. Melbourne is poised to once again become a top choice for international travellers seeking a diverse and enriching destination to visit. Welcome back, world.

Melbourne’s Iconic Tan Track

The Tan Track is a a 3.827 km track surrounding the picturesque Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne. It is the most popular and most visited running track in Melbourne with a growing reputation.

Irrespective of whether you are a fitness enthusiast looking for a great running, jogging, cycling or walking track or a casual visitor seeking a unique look at Melbourne’s past as well as current, don’t skip this awesome Melbourne attraction. In this post, we will explore the history, intriguing name and nickname, lap times and even reveal who ran the fastest lap of the Tan Track.

History

The Tan Track has a rich history dating back to the early 20th century.

It was created as a tanbark horse riding route around the Botanical Gardens, offering stunning views of lush Melbourne landscapes and pristine gardens. By the 1950s, equestrian use of the track stopped.

In 1974, the track was largely resurfaced with a mixture of rock and gravel, the way it appears to this day.

Why is it called the Tan?

One of the more intriguing aspects of the Tan Track is its name.

And like with so many famous sights, there are many theories around as to why it is called the Tan Track.

It may be a tribute to the tanbark that once covered the circuit (this is no longer the case though). Historically, this one probably makes the most sense. Tanbark was used to create a more soft, padded and comfortable track over the years.

Note, while the name may conjure images of the color tan, the track is not named after a colour or shade.

Another simple explanation is the fact that Aussies abbreviate so many things!

So like brekkie, barbie, arvo and avo, the Tan may just be another example. If this is true, Melbournians colloquially just shorten the Bo-TAN-ical Gardens to the “TAN”, making it easier to say. Possibly, just to confuse you.

I don’t know the if any of the above are the real reason for the name, it could even be a mix of them. You make up your own mind.

Walk or run the Tan

The track is suitable for walking and running. It is largely a gravel track these days with a small section of bitumen. It is also dog friendly (as long as on a leash). The track is suitable for all levels, easy to find and navigate, has lighting (last time I checked, until midnight) with distance markers every 250 metres.

The recognised starting point of a lap of the Tan is at the Pillars of Wisdom (close and opposite to the Swan Street Bridge and public BBQ areas) near the junction of Olympic Boulevard and Alexandra Avenue.

It is mostly a flat track with a small hill on Anderson Street. Locals call this area Heart Break Hill.

How long does it take to walk a lap of the Tan?

The Tan Track is about 3.827 kilometers (or 2.378 miles) long. Walking a lap at a medium pace typically takes around 30 to 50 minutes. For running, it takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Obviously these times will depend on your fitness level and walking  / running speed.

A pretty good circuit distance for a brisk morning walk or a leisurely jog, offering both a challenge and serenity in equal measure.

Who ran the fastest lap of the Tan Track?

Now, for those who crave a bit of competition or are just curious about how they stack up against the best, the fastest recorded lap of the Tan Track is a pretty remarkable achievement.

The record for the fastest lap around The Tan is held by Australian middle distance runner Craig Mottram. In 2006, Mottram completed a lap in an amazing 10 minutes and 8 seconds, showcasing not only his incredible speed but also the track’s potential for elite level training.

For more top results, check out the Run The Tan Hall of Fame section, outlining the top 10 and 100 male and female times as well para, walking and age category fastest lap times.

Maybe you too can make it on the list one day.

Address and Map of The Tan

Conclusion

Whether you’re an experienced runner aiming to beat Craig Mottram’s record or simply seeking a relaxing, healthy stroll next to Melbourne’s botanical beauty, the Tan Track has something for everyone. From its historical significance, catchy name and accessible lap length, it is a must visit Melbourne spot for fitness, leisure, social time and curious travellers alike.

Keep an eye out for some special events on the Tan and Botanical Gardens.

Grab your running shoes and discover why the Tan is more than just a track – it is an astonishing piece of Melbourne’s vibrant history and a perfect place to embrace your inner athlete or nature lover self.

If you are driving to the Tan, there is some handy parking spots surrounding the Royal Botanical Gardens (may get busy at popular times).
