Which shops are open now?
This is a question we get a lot. So we decided to make a comprehensive guide to Melbourne’s general, evening, late night and weekend shopping hours. In this guide, we will focus on mostly central Melbourne and suburbs near the CBD.
Melbourne. Just think of some of amazing things that happen here – the Melbourne Fashion Week, Melbourne Cup, Australian Open, AFL, Moomba, Grand Prix, Comedy Festival to name a few. With no shortage of top global events, Melbourne is a city that has much to offer both visitor and the resident alike. And this includes shopping.
We’re not only talking about 9 to 5 closed on the weekends type of shopping. Melbourne is a cutting edge modern city that offers a range of hours that extend much later in the evening and night. Ok… maybe I exaggerate, (Melbourne still has a LOT of catching up to do to compete with New York and Paris for example) but there are some evening shopping options and it is getting better.
For example, take an icon of Melbourne, the Queen Victoria Market. On most days, the market keeps daytime hours. However between early June and August in 2023, it opens its arms in the form of a Night Market. During that time it really is the place to visit for the sights, sounds and food tastes and fragrances of this wonderful historic site of Melbourne.
Weekday shopping hours in Melbourne
Let’s start with weekday shopping opening hours first.
From Monday to Friday, the general rule is that most Melbourne CBD and suburban shops open their doors from 9:00am to 5:00pm with some having hours of 10:00am till 6:00pm or 7:00pm.
There is obviously quite a bit of variability between individual businesses. Supermarkets near you, for example, will often open earlier and close later, especially those in the inner city. Public holidays need to be kept in mind as they mean most shops will be shut.
Late night shopping in Melbourne
Depending on what you would like to buy, Melbourne has numerous open shops when it comes to evening, late night and even early morning shopping.
Most suburbs near Melbourne CBD will have numerous options.
Supermarket late night shopping and opening hours
Major supermarket chains will often be open until 10:00pm or later especially in the inner city.
Let’s look at some examples in the CBD.

- Coles CBD Melbourne at the corner of Elizabeth St & Flinders St generally stays open between 06:00 or 07:00am and midnight
- Coles Melbourne Central is similarly open between 06:00 or 07:00am and midnight
- Coles Spencer Street‘s opening hours are between 06:00 and 11:00pm

- Woolworths at QV – opening hours are between 07:00am until 11:00pm in the evening
- Woolworths Metro Elizabeth Street – opening hours vary, from 07:00 – 09:00am and at the time of writing, late hours open until the latest of 10:00pm on Monday with earlier closing times on other days
- Woolworths Metro Flinders Street – opening hours vary, from 06:00 – 07:00am opening time until 08:00 – 10:00pm closing time depending on the day
- Woolworths Southern Cross – opening hours vary, from as early as 05:30am on some mornings until 11:00pm closing time on all days except Sunday (earlier closing of 10:00pm)
IGA Supermarket Opening Hours

24 hours Convenience Stores like 7 Eleven
If it is too late for any of the above, remember that there are a number of convenience stores, for example 7 Eleven, which are open 24 hours and spread all over the inner city.
Please check the accuracy of all these times, they can change any time. We do not guarantee the accuracy. Times last updated in August 2023. Let us know if you notice any changes or wrong times.
General shops late night shopping
Many general shops in the centre will stay open a little bit longer on Thursday and Friday evenings as well as many shopping centres having longer hours on Thursdays and or Fridays.
Some stores in the inner city will remain open until 7:00pm or even 9:00pm on Thursdays and/or Fridays as well.
Shopping centre late night shopping
If you’re looking for places where you want to do the sort of shopping that’s both practical and fun, why not try a shopping centre.
Shopping centres will generally have a couple of days per week which have late or extended opening hours.
Bourke Street Mall late hours
Bourke Street Mall, the iconic Melbourne shopping strip, is a great place to visit if you’re looking for an all in one experience in the heart of Melbourne.
It is home to David Jones, Australia’s oldest department store. They stay open until 9:00pm on Thursdays and Fridays and 7:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Nearby shops, like Myer and Sports Girl, conveniently keep similar hours most of the time.
QV Shopping Centre late hours
A lot of stores at QV Melbourne conveniently stay open longer on Friday evenings.
Chadstone Shopping Centre late hours
Okay, while Chadstone Shopping Centre is not in the CBD, it is quite easy to get to by car or public transport.
Chadstone often has extended hours on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
See all Chadstone Shopping Centre opening hours here on Melbourne Buddy.
Highpoint Shopping Centre late hours
Highpoint has two late nights.
They’re open until 9pm on Thursdays and Fridays.
Tip: Centres like QV, Chadstone, Highpoint, Eastland and Westfield may have late opening hours, but individual stores may not. It pays to check their website if you’re looking to make a late visit to a particular store.
Late night coffee in Melbourne
Where can you get a caffeine hit after hours?
Let’s see, our favourites for an evening or late night espresso or latte in Melbourne are:
- Brunetti in Flinders Lane, open until 10:00pm during the week and midnight on the weekends
- Pellegrini’s in Bourke Street, the iconic Italian restaurant, serves up a mean coffee until 10:00 or 11:30pm depending on the day
- Puzzle Coffee in Swanston Street is open until 06:00 or 07:00pm depending on the day of the week
Weekend shopping hours in Melbourne
There is quite a bit of shop to shop variability when it comes to weekends.
On Saturday, shopping hours in Melbourne CBD and shopping centres are generally 9:00am to 5:00pm (but ensure you check with the store you are after). Sundays, most will be open from 10:00am to 4:00pm or 5:00pm.
Apart from malls and shopping complexes mostly being open on the weekends, Melbourne markets are well worth exploring.
Remember the Queen Victoria Market we spoke about earlier? Well, the market is also open on Saturdays and Sundays. And here’s a trick: the ordinary shops open at 8:00am on Saturday; but those selling fresh produce, meat, fish, fruit & veg etc. will often open earlier, around 06:00am. Perfect for the early birds among us.
Another market that’s well worth the visit is the South Melbourne Market on the corner of Coventry and Cecil streets. It opens its doors at 8:00am on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday and closes them at 4:00 pm. This market is all about sustainability and fresh produce, but you can also buy books and toys, and all manner of goodies there.
